AITP Region 3 Student Conference
Building a Future in Information Technology
The database design competition will allow teams of one or two students to utilize their analysis, design, and SQL coding skills and apply them to a real business problem within an approximate three hour time frame. Contestants will be presented with a problem statement and data for analysis and problem solving. The database design will consist of an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) and a relational schema, which will be turned in for scoring. From this, they will be required to design a working database solution and implement specified components of that database using SQL which will also be turned in for scoring. Students will use either MySQL or SQL Server in the contest. (NOTE: ER Assistant can be downloaded FREE at: http://er-assistant.software.informer.com/2.1/).
Teams for this contest can consist of 1-2 Students. Each member can bring your own computer(BYOC).
This contest will take place on Friday, October 21, 2016 from 4:00 ‐ 7:00 PM
Students should be knowledgeable with all of the following aspects:
- Database Design
- Datatype Attributes
- Primary and Foreign Keys
- Cardinality and Optionality
- Relational Schema objects such as tables, views, and indexes
- Data Definition Language
- Creating objects using SQL
- Instantiate ERD components into a physical database
- Script objects to create and/or use a working database

Students may use reference books
Scoring will be done based on a rubric, and in the event of a tie, the team with the fastest time wins.
Contests will use Course Management Software
The AITP Region 3 Student Conference will use Coursesites Software, which is a free product from Blackboard. Each contest will have its’ own course with a login for each team. Any documents the team will need will be loaded under the Information folder for each contest. The students will submit their solutions under the Content folder.
